Insecure is like the ... Actually, let's not compare. Insecure is one of the best shows on tv and it's like no other. Let us not call it the "Black version of Friends," the "LA version of "Sex and the City," or the "Younger version of Girlfriends." "TV has always been drama, comedy and story telling. Issa Rae is telling the story of a millennial woman and it is brilliant!
Issa is everything we aren't supposed to be. Insecure, flawed, confused and broke! Though Issa's character is someone we can relate to because we have ALL been "there" at least once.
I love the connection with her friends, her struggles at work and her messy relationship. I am eager to see the character's arc and her evolution.
Now, I am NOT A PRUDE but the excessive use of "bitch," when speaking to her friends and "nigga," when referencing men (all men) is jarring to me. I keep all versions of the "n-word" out of my vernacular and reserve the word "bitch" for people, places and things that I don't enjoy.
DISCLAIMER: One woman does not represent ALL BLACK PEOPLE and SOME BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH ANY VERSION OF THE WORD "NIGGER!"
The script is a fun, visual feast, a good laugh and an escape from our crazy world. Insecure is part of my new Sunday night ritual! Congrats to the show and all involved - it's goooooood TV!
Insecure is on HBO, check it out -
