ESSENCE WHITE, SHEAIR BUTTERS - 5QS: A Q&A BETWEEN TWO WOMEN WHO'VE STARTED THEIR OWN BUSINESS
I was first introduced to the fabulous Essence White through Facebook. She was undergoing the fight of her life. Her mother was looking for something to cleanse and soothe her skin during her chemo-therapy. They found CLEANSE by LAUREN NAPIER and fell in love with LAUREN NAPIER BEAUTY’s results.
Several months later, I received and email from Essence herself. Through her treatment Essence’s skin had been ravaged. She was inspired to create her own product. The light bulb moment that would turn this young and beautiful survivor into a full blown entrepreneur!
Essence and I chatted and she sent me a glamorous package with a beautifully packaged jar of fluffy, whipped body cream.
Living in New York, I suffered through the very cold and dry winters that were depleting my legs of moisture. I instantly fell in love with Essence’s passion and her product. So much so that I have even shopped for it and shared it on set!
It is an honor to introduce you to Ms. Essence White and powerful woman with wonderful product - My Everything Cream.
1. Looking back on your first job, what skill did you use that you still use today?
My first job was at a chain restaurant, and as odd as it may sound, I learned that if you’re open and honest with people, about even the most menial of things, they’ll appreciate you for it.
2. Was there a defining moment that made you start your business?
After my cancer diagnosis, a lot of things fell apart financially. My mom was no longer working full time so she could stay home and take care of me, and even though I didn’t know it at the time, we were quickly eating through our savings. One day I was brainstorming about how I could contribute and selling the cream we’d been making in our kitchen to treat my many skin ailments popped into my mind. We’d been making ‘My Everything Cream’ and sharing it with friends and even a few patients we knew at the hospitals I’d stayed at. It seemed a no-brainer to try and also share it with the world.
3. What was he first step you took to launch your brand?
It happened all so fast. I just went for it. I didn’t know anything about selling skincare products online. But I threw myself into learning all I could and found sites like SBA.com to be an invaluable resource. Also, Google is your friend (LOL). Other than that, I take things day-by-day. I am still learning. Both me and my mom are really new to this, but we have an unwavering faith in our product because we have seen what it can do first hand, and that keeps us motivated.
4. What is the greatest lesson learned in your first year in business?
Wow, it hasn’t even been a full year yet, but I think I’m learning to be patient with myself. I’m learning to not compare myself to others. I’m learning to not expect overnight success and to be grateful and thankful for the hundreds of people who have supported me so far.
5. What is your best piece of advice for your fellow Female Founder?
Simple. BE PATIENT. Don’t beat up on yourself. Realize that the first few months, even years are all about building yourself up- laying a foundation. Keep the faith. Think positive and please, never give up.
