I met Shontay Lundy through a quick DM! She is beautiful and smart, most of all an advocate for sun-care. Yes, sun-care for women of color. I live for summer and it’s so important to protect my maturing melanin. I am a sun worshiper and I live for summer, but skin cancers are increasing amongst people of color and we must do all that we can to protect our rich beautiful skin. To combat the stats, I don’t make a move without sunscreen, especially Black Girls Sunscreen!

Looking back on your first job, what skill did you use that you still use today?

My very first job was having a paper route where I learned confidence and accountability.  These attributes taught me to eliminate self-doubt giving me the foundation to start Black Girl Sunscreen.

Was there a defining moment that made you start your business?

I don’t know if I always knew that I had a business.  I started with one product that has grown into a business with my hard work and the love and support of the community.

What was he first step you took to launch your brand?

The mental part was that I told myself that I could and to this day I remind myself that I can.  The labor part was finding a manufacturing partner that could help produce the ideal formula.

What is the greatest lesson learned in your first year in business?

Never get to high or too low.  Being consistent is the name of the game.

What is your best piece of advice for your fellow Female Founder?

Keep composure.  If you get a crazy email, wait until the next day to respond.  LOL!

If you want to try Black Girl Sunscreen in person, you can find it at select Target stores.
