Being a makeup artist isn’t just about a full beat. As a makeup artist I was up early applying makeup to men, women, dogs, characters and more. What is most important about being a makeup artist is listening and understanding the client’s desire.

I’ve never been a full beat makeup artist. I believe less is more and highlighting the subject of the application is key to creating a look and making the client feel their best.

I am often told by the new artists on the block that minimalist makeup is harder to apply than it seems. I agree. It’s true that we see color and fall into habits or just get caught up in the vibe.

Want to create a successful client-specific look? Ask what they want, use references and listen to what your client says. Again, listen to what your client says! Finally, it’s easier to add than to take away, so start small an evolve into the look together.

One of my favorite subjects here is Lena Waithe. Her looks are specific to who she is and I love it!

Glossier Boy Brow is one of my favorite brow products out there. Designed to thicken, fill in, and groom brows into place. The creamy wax formula is inspired by traditional hair pomade for soft, flexible hold that doesn’t stiffen or flake.

Troy Surratt’s innovative new component dispenses the foundation through an angled brush for effortless application, and quick touch-ups. Oil-free, self-setting formula gives optimal skin-perfecting coverage with a longwearing, natural finish that is virtually undetectable. I like the finish and the applicator tool. A little goes a long way, it’s easy to wear and even easier to apply.

Lipstickqueen, Oxymoron matte lipgloss is my favorite! It’s a must have! Many women are afraid of matte because they think it is high-maintenance, hard to wear and drying. Not so with this lip-cheek rouge, especially as the four shades were designed to be the colors of blush, very sweet, subtle and flattering.

If you are wearing a bold or bright lip color then Oxymoron is the perfect way to subtly enhance your natural cheek color too!

I love a good no-makeup-makeup! How about you?
